Middle eye skin ( tunica media bulbi / uvea ): 2. + 6. + 10.
Inner eye skin ( tunica interna bulbi ): 13.

The uvea ( lat. Uva 'grape'), also called the middle skin of the eye ( tunica media bulbi ), is a pigment-bearing layer on the eye below the highly scattering (opaque) sclera (dermis). The main tasks of this layer are accommodation , adaptation and nutrition of the retina further inside .

The uvea is made up of

  • Iris (iris, task: adaptation)
  • Corpus ciliare (radiation body, task: accommodation, production of aqueous humor)
  • Choroidea (choroid, task: nourishment of the retina, removal of heat generated, mechanical cushion).

The uvea is individually pigmented, similar to the outer skin, for genetic reasons. This causes z. B. the different eye colors . Together with the highly pigmented outer layer of the inner eye skin in almost all people, the pigmentation of the uvea darkens the eye against scattered radiation from outside and inside.

The tissue of the uvea corresponds phylogenetically to the soft meninges (pia mater and arachnoidea) and supplies the inner layer of nerve cells, the retina , which is part of the central nervous system.

Inflammation of the uvea is known as uveitis .
