Uwe Bartmann (born December 19, 1961 in Krefeld ) is a former German disabled athlete .

Career

Uwe Bartmann is severely disabled (paraplegia Th 3/4) and chose wheelchair fencing as a sport , which he practiced in all three disciplines (epee, foil, saber). Born in Krefeld, Bartmann competed for sports clubs in Essen , Göttingen and Tauberbischofsheim . He later moved to Jena and in 2006 was a founding member of the Fechtsportclub Jena eV

Because of his good performance, he soon got into the squad of the German national disabled sports team. At the 1988 Summer Paralympics in Seoul, he won the gold medal in epee fencing with the German team ( Wilfried Lipinski , Dieter Leicht ). At the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona, ​​he won three medals: first he achieved a bronze medal in the epee singles in class 2. This success was followed by a silver medal with the epee team consisting of Bartmann, Lipinski, Leicht and Udo Schwarz . A third medal, also silver, he won with the team in saber fencing made up of Bartmann, Günter Spieß , Lipinski and Wolfgang Kempf . At the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, Bartmann, Kempf, Lipinski and Maximilian Miller won the bronze medal in saber fencing. Bartmann's last Paralympics were the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney. Here he was able to win a silver medal in epee fencing in a team with Lipinski, Jürgen Mayer and Schwarz. For these successes, he was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf on June 23, 1993 by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker .

Bartmann was world champion with the German team (1994, 1998) and individual European champion (1999) as well as vice world champion (1986, 1994, 1998). Even after his international career ended, he was an active wheelchair fencer for many years. He took part in German championships several times. On September 29, 2008, he won the German championship in wheelchair epee fencing, and he also won the German runner-up at the various German championships in epee and foil fencing.

Bartmann was involved in the International Wheelchair Fencing Committee (IWFC). He is a member of the board of the German Wheelchair Sports Association .
