Life

At the age of ten, the merchant's son decided to become a painter. He received his first artistic impulses in the house of a school friend whose parents owned a collection of modern art. In particular, the pictures by the progressive painter Josef Čapek appealed to the open-minded boy with their very human themes. After completing his training at the graphic school, he studied graphics and applied painting under Karel Svolinský as well as art history and aesthetics at the College of Arts and Crafts in Prague , and graduated in 1950 with a diploma. From 1950 to 1969 he lived as a freelance artist in Prague and was a member of the local artists' association. His wide-ranging activities included, among other things, the illustration of children's books, the design of sets and costumes for theater and television, as well as the design of several postage stamps for the Post Office of Czechoslovakia. In 1969 he came to Switzerland as a political refugee. From then on he lived and worked in the Basel , Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn areas until his death in 1993 .
