Karel Svolinský

Karel Svolinský (born January 11, 1896 in Heiligenberg near Olomouc , Moravia , † September 16, 1986 in Prague ) was a Czech painter , graphic artist and book illustrator .

Life

Svolinský studied at the University of Arts and Crafts in Prague with Max Švabinský . He later taught as a professor at the university. He was with the sculptor Marie, geb. Veselá (* 1903), a daughter of General František Veselý (1864–1953) married.

He became famous in the 1920s through illustrations for Karel Hynek Mácha's poem " Máj ". The artist's extensive work, which is characterized by a folkloric and lively style, includes around 150 bookplates, 400 New Year's cards and 210 drafts for postage stamps, 83 of which were issued. As a graphic artist, he was involved in the supplementary volumes of Ottův slovník naučný . According to Svolinský's designs, the not undisputed redesign of the astronomical clock of the Olomouc City Hall took place between 1947 and 1955, for which his wife Marie Svolinská created the puppet figures. Furthermore, Svolinský designed a window of the St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague and created designs for Czechoslovak banknotes.

In 1981 Svolinský was honored with the medal of the Czechoslovak Ministry of Transport and Post.

In 1992 the Karel Svolinský Gallery opened in the Kunčice pod Ondřejníkem elementary school . On the occasion of his 100th birthday, a 200-krone commemorative coin appeared in the Czech Republic in 1996.
