Vélo'v is a free bike rental system in Lyon , based on the Cyclocity system , the same system as " Citybike Wien " in Vienna . It was put into operation in 2005. After 2000 bicycles were available at 250 stations at the beginning, this number rose to 4000 bicycles at 340 stations by the end of 2007. At the end of November 2007 there were 50,000 registered users.

Thanks to Vélo'v, the Greater Lyon area hopes to reduce car traffic in the city of Lyon (including Villeurbanne ) and its surroundings by 10 percent. At the moment, the modal split has been reduced by four percent to 47 percent .

Bicycle traffic in Lyon has increased by 80 percent since the introduction of the public bicycle, as more and more private bicycles are being bought and used at the same time.

In the beginning, the system had many problems with vandalism and theft. In this way, around 800 of the 3,000 bikes had to be replaced by the operator in 2006. The operator JCDecaux finances this offer by marketing outdoor advertising on city-owned areas.

functionality

A user card is required for identification at the machine. You can choose between the following cards: Carte Longue Durée (long-term card ), Carte Courte Durée (short-term card ) or the Carte Técély (electronic metro card ).

To remove the bike, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the machine. First you have to insert the card, then enter the PIN code and finally choose a bike from all possible bikes. You have 45 seconds to remove your bike. All you have to do is apply the handbrake and then pull the bike out towards you. A light up and a double beep confirm the successful removal.

To return the bike, it must be locked into one of the empty bike mounts. A beep and light up confirm the successful return. It is also possible to receive a receipt via the Vélo'v machine.

Cyclocity bike

The bike has two front reflectors and two rear reflectors, which are powered by a dynamo. A bike computer on the handlebars logs possible defects and usage times for later repair and maintenance. The bike has a basket above the front wheel in which a spiral lock is attached to secure the bike at any location. The bike stand is biped to take a weight of over 25 kg. In addition to a bell, the bike has a three-speed gearshift and drum brakes on the front and rear wheels. All cables are routed within the frame.

Usage statistics

95 percent of all journeys end within 30 minutes and therefore free of charge for the user. A bicycle covers around 10,000 km a year. The operator announced the following details:

  • Average usage time / travel: 17 min
  • Average covered distance / way: 2.7 km
  • Average number of uses or trips: approx. 12 per bike and day

This results in:

  • Average usage time / day: 3.5 h as well
  • following calculation: 2.7 km / trip × 12 trips / d × 365 d / a = 11,826 km / a and bike.
