history
After the 50th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in 1965, the Armenian community of Los Angeles decided to build a memorial that would serve as a permanent meeting place to commemorate the genocide victims. Months later, the city of Montebello secured a place in a public park for it. Armenians from around the world participated in the funding and donated US $ 125,000.
Garin K. Hovannisian (son of the politician Raffi Hovannisian and grandson of the historian Richard Hovannisian ) described in his book Family of Shadows from 2010 the construction of the monument as a "milestone for the Armenians of the United States". He continues afterwards "It took almost five years of town hall meetings, city hall debates and fundraising to inaugurate a monument in a public park". He also notes that " ARF , Ramgavar , Armenakan , Apostolics , Catholics , Protestants and every other category of Armenians gathered at Bicknell Park for the opening ceremony." More than ten thousand Armenians attended the inauguration ceremony. The then State Senator George Deukmejian , who would later become Governor of California, read Governor Ronald Reagan's announcement.
Clues to the location of the Genocide Martyrs Monument were posted on March 22, 2011 along the motorway near the Garfield / Wilcox exit.
The monument is to be placed under monument protection on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide in 2015.
