The Association of the Electricity Industry e. V. ( VDEW ) bundled and represented the interests of around 750 German energy supply companies vis-à-vis politics and consumers. In 2007, the VDEW was merged into the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW).

history

The VDEW was founded in Berlin in 1892 by 16 electricity companies as the Association of Electricity Companies (VdEW); the company was based in Berlin. In 1950 the Vereinigung Deutscher Elektrizitätswerke e. V. (VDEW) was founded with effect from January 1st, 1951 and is based in Frankfurt. With this step, the emerging separation of the networks of GDR and Federal Republic of Germany, which was completed in 1954, was anticipated.

With the German reunification and the re-establishment of the public utilities and regional suppliers in East Germany, the VDEW expanded its field of activity to East Germany. In 2000, the information center of the electricity industry , an institution for public relations work for the German electricity industry, was merged with the Association of the Electricity Industry. At the beginning of 2005, the VDEW moved from Frankfurt to Berlin. The VDEW also has a representation at the European Union in Brussels and an office in Bonn.

The association merged in 2007 with the BGW , the VRE and the Association of Network Operators (VDN) to form the Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW).

Professional associations

The association had four technically oriented professional associations that operated as independent associations under the VDEW:

In the course of the integration of the VDEW into the BDEW, the VDN was reorganized in 2008.
