The Federal Association of Energy and Water Management e. V. ( BDEW ) is a lobby and interest group of German companies and associations and as this tries to influence legislative procedures in the field of the energy industry . BDEW employs over 150 people for this purpose.

The BDEW was created through the merger of four energy industry associations; they made this decision on June 19, 2007 in Berlin :

According to its own information, the BDEW represents around 1900 companies in the fields of electricity, natural gas and heat, renewable energies, electromobility, energy networks, water supply and wastewater disposal. These represent around 90% of electricity sales, 60% of local and district heating sales, 90% of natural gas sales as well as 80% of drinking water production and 60% of wastewater disposal in Germany.

From October 2008 to January 2016, the former member of the Bundestag and Minister of State at Federal Chancellor Hildegard Müller ( CDU ) chaired the main management in Berlin and in May 2015 switched to RWE (Innogy) as a member of the board .

Her successor from October 2014 to April 2016 was Stefan Kapferer ( FDP ), since December 2019 Chairman of the Management Board of the transmission system operator 50Hertz Transmission .

Kerstin Andreae has been the chairman of the main management board of BDEW since November 2019 . The qualified economist has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since 1990. Before moving to BDEW, Andreae was the economic policy spokeswoman for the Greens parliamentary group.

“The BDEW Presidium consists of the President and four Vice-Presidents as well as the General Managers with an advisory vote. The President of the previous term of office is a natural member of the Presidium. The honorary members of the Presidium are elected by the Board from among its members for two years. In accordance with the statutes, the gas, electricity / district heating and water / wastewater sectors, the supply groups (size classes) and the value-added stages as well as the cross-network companies are adequately represented in the BDEW Presidium. "
