The building of the VEB Transformatoren- und Röntgenwerk, Overbeckstr. 48 in Dresden is a listed industrial building of the GDR from the 1950s. The assembly hall with “monolithic reinforced concrete columns” with “externally visible, recessed wall fields” is remarkable. The building bears witness to the “traditional construction method” without foregoing the use of prefabricated components. In this way “art and technology” would be linked.

The building is listed in Dresden's list of monuments for the Mickten district at Marie-Curie-Straße 10.

history

VEB transformer and x-ray plant Hermann Matern Dresden

The state-owned company Transformatoren- und Röntgenwerk (TuR) " Hermann Matern ", Dresden emerged from the company Koch & Sterzel AG, which was expropriated in 1946. Later the plants in Übigau , Gera, Halle, Hohen Neuendorf and Plauen also belonged to the company. Elevators, pacemakers, transducers, sonic washers and home solariums were produced. Almost 3,500 people were employed in the Dresden plant. With the turnaround , the state-owned company was privatized and the "Transformatoren- und Röntgenwerk GmbH" was created, which in 1992 was partially taken over by Siemens AG .

description

The building was constructed between 1951 and 1953 by the architects Paul Michael and Paul Voges as a "[n] eue industrial plant" with a usable area of 8,000 square meters. The 30 meter high front building is remarkable. This consists of an assembly hall with “monolithic reinforced concrete columns” with “externally visible, recessed wall panels”. The hall has three transepts and is "dominant" for the Elbe arch near Kaditz . The building is 80.1 meters long, 23 meters wide and 29 meters high. The external appearance is characterized by pillars that rest on a risalit protruding base storey. These taper upwards and support the framework under the gable roof , which was built as a steel structure. Between the monumental pillars, 4 × 5 meter windows can be seen, which are grouped together by ribbon windows. Low-lying concrete infills frame the ribbon windows and emphasize the vertical. The pillars and the concrete infills have been designed in different colors.
