VERNOF ( Vereniging van Nederlandse Fabrikanten van Eetbare Oliën en Vetten , KvK number 40409397) is the association of Dutch producers of edible oils and fats. The association was founded in 1979 through the merger of the Association of Dutch Oil Producers, founded in 1912, and the Association of Dutch Oil and Fat Processors, founded in 1940. According to Jan Willem van Gelder from 2005 and based on official information from the tax authorities, there are 14 companies in this area in the Netherlands.

Activities and memberships

In by the American Oil Chemists' Society oriented World Conference on Oilseed and Vegetable Oil Processing Technology (1 to 5 March 1976 Amsterdam) worked VERNOF as co-organizer. VERNOF also takes an active part in other conferences, for example in Cannes (1985).

In 1992 the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization documents VERNOF as the only Dutch organization representing the interests of the oil producing and processing industry. Due to the increasing criticism of the unsustainable methods in palm oil cultivation , VERNOF is involved in the task force of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RTRS).

VERNOF is the Dutch member of FEDIOL , the federation of the European vegetable oil and oil cake industry. According to its own statements, FEDIOL represents 85% of the turnover with oils and fats in Europe.

effect

The Netherlands has been a major importer of these goods since the early days of international trade in oils and fats. This can be seen, among other things, from the fact that Van den Bergh & Jurgens introduced improved production methods as early as the 1930s and thus laid the foundation for Unilever , one of the largest companies in this sector.

Due to the important trade position of the Dutch ports at the mouth of the Rhine, VERNOF's predominant trading practices in the Netherlands also have an impact far across Europe, where buyers of oilseeds are subject to the Dutch contractual conditions. From the global annual production of 46.6 million tons of palm oil in 2012, around 2 million tons are imported into Europe through the Netherlands. The trade in the raw product and processed components thus continues to have an effect in other countries where the VERNOF conditions and arbitration awards are recognized by local courts.

Analogous to the standard conditions in the German grain trade , the VERNOF usages for the trade in oil fruits , fatty oils , fats and oils define commercial law . Usages also compete with the contracts of the Federation of Oils, Seeds and Fats Associations (FOSFA), which are mainly used in world trade . The first version of the VERNOF contractual conditions was presented in 1981, the current version is the 2004 conditions.

As a lobby group, VERNOF is involved in analyzes and evaluations of the trade in oil fruits and also represents the controversial import of palm oil to Europe or supports research, the results of which are beneficial to the members.
