VGF is a peptide , which is also known as "VGF nerve growth factor inducible protein", "neuroendocrine specific protein" or "VGF protein" and was discovered in 1985. It consists of 593 amino acids and is controlled by the tissue hormone NGF . The molar mass is 65  kDa . VGF and its fragments play a role in energy balance , food intake and mood. VGF is released by neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system , as well as cells in the adrenal gland and beta cells in the endocrine part of the pancreas .
