The Vorarlberg Institute for Vascular Investigation and Treatment (VIVIT) is a non-university scientific institute in western Austria that primarily focuses on the research and treatment of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases such as diabetes or atherosclerosis .

history

VIVIT was founded in 1997 by Heinz Drexel , who was the primary physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at the Feldkirch Regional Hospital until the end of 2016, as a non-profit and non-profit association (ZVR number 046542627). The aim of the establishment was to provide medical research in Vorarlberg with a suitable platform due to the lack of a university. The former governor of Vorarlberg, Martin Purtscher, was the club's president from its foundation until 2014 . Internist Egon Humpeler has held this position since 2014 . The institute is located at the Feldkirch State Hospital; In 2005 a molecular biology laboratory was established in Dornbirn .

Research priorities

The institute deals with issues from the fields of cardiology, diabetology, nephrology, oncology, genetics and molecular biology, ranging from basic research to practical applications in everyday clinical practice. In these areas, VIVIT employees have published over 250 scientific publications (as of December 2016) in international journals (listed in PubMed ) and presented over 1200 contributions at scientific congresses. As a result, VIVIT has developed into a leading institute in Austria, especially in the field of diabetes, metabolism and secondary diseases. VIVIT cooperates with several research institutes on an international level:
