The VW EA855 evo (EA = development order) is a five-cylinder gasoline engine from Volkswagen AG . The biggest difference to the EA855 is the engine block, which in the EA855 evo is made of aluminum instead of gray cast iron. This saves 18.8 kg of weight in the evo compared to its predecessor.
technology
The camshafts of the EA855 evo are driven by a chain drive that sits in front of the gearbox. The cylinder walls of this engine are coated with a cast steel applied by a plasma spraying process. However, this coating is only 0.1-0.2 mm thick. By further weight optimization z. B. on the pistons, crankshaft, connecting rods and the oil pan, the engine was a total of 26 kg lighter than its predecessor.
This model also has innovations in the oil supply. A stepless vane oil pump is used here, which can regulate the oil pressure independently of the speed by means of a spring mechanism.
Like its predecessor, the engine has a displacement of 2480 cm³, a bore of 82.5 mm and a stroke of 92.5 mm, but the piston pins have been enlarged to 23 mm in diameter. The main bearing bolts have a thread size of M10 and the main bearings have a size of 52 mm. The main bearing shells have a special coating to reduce wear when using the start-stop system .
use
The engine is used with the code letters DNWA (engine with particle filter ) and DAZA (engine without particle filter) in the Audi TT RS FV (since 2016), Audi RS3 (since 2017) and in the new Audi RS Q3 F3 (since 2019).
