history

Vagenende was opened by Édouard Chartier in 1905, after the Famille opened a restaurant on rue du Temple in 1895, Chez Chartier in 1896 and Bouillon Racine in 1906 . The restaurant opened under the name Bouillon Chartier (see Bouillons ) is in a very good location near the Latin Quarter . The interior was designed by the architect Jean-Marie Bouvier .

The restaurant has had this name since it was sold to the Vagenende couple in 1920. The interior of the Vagenende has not changed much since it opened. The decor in the Art Nouveau style is richly mirrored, consists of tiles decorated with rural scenes by the painter G. Pivrain and shiny golden cloakrooms made of polished copper . Glass chandeliers and wood paneling give the room a lush splendor. Under the Minister of Culture André Malraux , the Vagenende was placed under a preservation order in 1966 in order to protect it from destruction.
