Vahid Asghari (born April 3, 1986 , Persian وحید اصغری) is an Iranian human rights activist, freedom of expression activist , political prisoner and feminist who was sentenced to death twice by the Iranian government between 2011 and 2012 . The sentence was changed to a long prison term.

arrest

Shortly before a flight to India, where he was studying, Asghari was arrested by members of the Revolutionary Guard on May 8, 2008 at Tehran's Imam Khomeini airport and has been in custody ever since. A revolutionary court presided over by Abdolqassem Salavati eventually sentenced him to death. Asghari was found guilty of the following political offenses: "Propaganda against the Iranian government", maintaining the Shabtaz news agency , which is focused on human rights cases , establishing a news site critical of the regime, supporting anti-religious and secular websites, providing financial and technical support for websites critical of the regime, creating a national plan against government censorship , communications and technical support for the BBC Persian broadcaster , administration of more than 200 opposition websites, the establishment of the international campaign for the development of gender equality and online training for the Green Revolution .

On December 7, 2014, another Revolutionary Court commuted the death penalty to 18 years in prison.

Conditions of detention and allegations of torture

Asghari accuses the Iranian authorities claim to have beaten him and his judicial assistance in the form of a public defender to deny. Ahmed Shaheed , the UN human rights representative for Iran, confirmed that Asghari said he had been tortured and held in prolonged solitary confinement . He was also repeatedly threatened that his family could be arrested, tortured or raped in order to force him to confess. Severe physical assaults were also used as a form of torture for this purpose. Asghari is being held in Evin Prison , a notorious prison for political prisoners.

Defamation proceedings

Asghari sued the FARS news agency and state broadcaster IRIB in 2011 for defamation accusing him of accepting multimillion-dollar bribes from abroad, including from Google , DreamHost and Citibank . The Supreme Court of Iran, during its ruling on Asghari, upheld the complaint, at least on this point, ruling that these allegations were baseless.
