Ferrera Valley
The Ferrera Valley ( Rhaeto-Romanic Val Ferrera ) is a valley about ten kilometers long in the canton of Graubünden between the Schams and the Avers . The Avers Rhine flows through the Ferrera Valley . The only places are Inner- and Ausserferrera .
The Ferrera Valley was known until the early modern times for its iron ore deposits , which also ensured the inhabitants' economic livelihood through mining . The Schmelzra at the entrance of the valley is a mining historical industrial monument and has been under the preservation order of the Canton of Graubünden since 1972 .
Until the 20th century, the linguistic and cultural border between Rhaeto-Romans and Walsers ran between the Ferrera Valley and the Avers , but not the confessional one , as both valley communities joined the Reformation and accepted the reformed teaching.
