from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Coordinates: 46 ° 45 '  N , 10 ° 12'  E ; CH1903:  eight hundred and ten thousand nine hundred and four  /  180,770 The Val Sampuoir is a right tributary of the Swiss Lower Engadine and is situated on the territory of the municipality of Scuol .

Surname

The name of the valley, like the Val Sampuoir of the same name in the nearby municipality of Valsot , comes from an old word sap for German fir, forest (Latin sapinus, also fir ) , which no longer exists in Romansh .

The valley end is the Piz Sampuoir of the same name (3,023 m above sea level) on the borders of the communities of Scuol and Zernez .

Alpine farming

The Alp Sampuoir lies at 1,854  m above sea level. M. and is fed by a farm in Ardez with suckler cow husbandry.

In earlier times the brown bear was a problem for alpine farming in the Val Sampuoir. Therefore, a water wheel with a hammer was installed near the alpine huts, which kept the bears away at night. The last bear was hunted in Val Sampuoir on October 12, 1861, but the last mention of a cracked calf came more than 30 years later, on July 16, 1895 on Alp Sursass at the left end of the valley.

Hydropower

The Ardez hamlet Sur En operated a mill on the Aua da Sampuoir (Eng. Sampuoir brook ) until the 19th century . At the same place, water power was also used for a sawmill until 1916.

Halfway between the Alp Sampuoir and the confluence with the Inn , the Aua da Sampuoir is now taken by the Engadin power plants . The version at 1644 m. ü. M. leads the water in the tunnel initially southwards, i.e. towards the valley direction. Under the Piz Nair on the border between Ardez and Tarasp, the tunnel joins the tunnel from Ova Spin near Zernez to Pradella near Scuol . The water use of Val Sampuoir is technically designed for a maximum of 1.5 cubic meters per second.
