Vale de Vargo is a place and a former municipality in the Portuguese region of the Alentejo .

history

Vale de Vargo has been an independent municipality since the 16th century at the latest.

On April 28, 1995, one of the extremely rare cases of a mule birth occurred here . These animals are actually not able to reproduce and the animal became the object of scientific research afterwards.

With the administrative reform of 2013 , Vale de Vargo was merged with Vila Nova de São Bento to form a new municipality.

Vale de Vargo was the seat of a community of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Serpa in the Beja district . The community had an area of ​​58 km² and 971 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

As part of the territorial reform of September 29, 2013 , the municipalities of Vale de Vargo and Vila Nova de São Bento were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Vila Nova de São Bento e Vale de Vargo . Vila Nova de São Bento became the seat of the municipality.
