Valencia letourneuxi is a small freshwater fish found in freshwater and brackish water in Albania and western Greece. There are proven stocks in the Albanian Butrintsee and in the river area of ​​the Alfios in the western Peloponnese . They may have become extincton Corfu and Lefkas .

features

Valencia letourneuxi reaches a body length of 8 cm, has a stocky, laterally slightly flattened body with flat head and back and is no longer than 4 years old. Males are bluish to gray, show one to 14 dark bands on the sides of the body, which are narrower or just as wide as the light spaces, and iridescent points. The caudal fin is transparent or bluish, with two to four vertical rows of dots and a dark rear edge. The dorsal and anal fins do not reach the caudal fin. Females are light brown, light yellow to whitish, without a shoulder spot and have transparent fins.

Way of life

Valencia letourneuxi lives in stagnant and slowly flowing, in most cases heavily overgrown waters and feeds on small invertebrates, especially insects and mosquito larvae . The fish normally live in fresh water, but they have a high salt tolerance and survived a salinity of 4.6% in laboratory tests.

Danger

The species is threatened by habitat destruction, water pollution and introduced food competitors, especially Gambusia holbrooki . The IUCN lists Valencia letourneuxi as "Critically Endangered" (critically endangered).
