Valencia is a genus of the toothpies (Cyprinodontiformes). The genus is the only one in the Valenciidae family. There are three types.
- The Valencia carp fish ( Valencia hispanica ) lives in Spain in stagnant and slow-flowing fresh waters along the Mediterranean coast from Gibraltar to the Pyrenees. The species also goes into brackish water .
- The second species, Valencia letourneuxi , lives only in a few, a few square meters large locations along the coast in the extreme north-west of Greece and in the Butrint lagoon in southern Albania . The populations in Corfu and Lefkas may have died out.
- Valencia robertae occurs in southern Greece . The species was only newly described in April 2014 .
features
The three species reach lengths of four to eight centimeters, their body is cylindrical, elongated, with a slightly flattened back. In the dorsal fin they have eight to eleven fin rays and 28 to 34 scales along the lateral line organ . The rostral cartilage is very short or absent.
The three species live to be around three years old, feed on small invertebrates and lay eggs. They are endangered by the importation of alien fish, the pollution of their home waters and the abstraction of water for the purpose of irrigation.
