Valentin-Yves Mudimbe

Valentin-Yves Mudimbe (born December 8, 1941 in Jadotville ) is a Congolese anthropologist , writer and literary scholar .

Life

Mudimbe received his PhD from the University of Leuven in 1970 and then taught at the University of Lubumbashi . In 1979 he went into exile in the United States , where he taught at Stanford University . To this day he is a professor at Duke University .

His most important work The Invention of Africa is often compared to Edward Said's Orientalism .

In 1975 he received the Grand prix catholique de littérature for his work Entre les eaux: Dieu, un prêtre, la révolution .
