Valentin Schindler

Valentin Schindler (born February 14 ( February 12?) 1543 in Oederan ; † June 11 (June 8?) 1604 in Helmstedt ) was a German philologist and orientalist.

Life

On March 6, 1555, Schindler had moved into the electoral state school in Pforta and enrolled at the University of Leipzig in the summer semester of 1558 . After starting his first studies in Leipzig, he moved to the University of Wittenberg on July 28, 1562 . Here he acquired the lowest academic degree of a Baccalaureus on September 7, 1564, obtained his master's degree in philosophy on March 9, 1568 and was admitted to the philosophical faculty in 1571.

In the same year he took over the theological professorship of the Hebrew language and moved with this to the philosophical faculty. He was their dean in the winter semester of 1576 and 1585, in the summer semester of 1579 rector and in the following winter semester he was the equivalent prorector of the Alma Mater . At the instigation of the representatives of Lutheran Orthodoxy , he was expelled from his teaching post in Wittenberg in 1593 and went to the University of Helmstedt as a professor of the Hebrew language on December 3, 1593 . Schindler was a widely respected orientalist in his day, whose main work Lexicon pentaglottum appeared after his death and was reprinted several times in the 17th century.

Schindler was married at least twice. His first marriage was with Katharina NN before 1574. († November 10, 1585 in Wittenberg in child trouble) closed. The name of his second wife is unknown. He is likely to have married her outside of Wittenberg between 1586 and 1588. Of the children are known:
