Alfredo Valenzuela Puelma (born February 8, 1856 in Valparaíso , † October 27, 1909 in Villejuif ) was a Chilean painter .

Puelma studied from the age of 12 at the Academia de Bellas Artes with Ernst Kirchbach and Juan Mochi . On a study trip to Paris from 1991 to 1885, he continued his training with Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and attended anatomy courses at the Sorbonne . On a second trip to Paris in 1887, he studied with Jean Paul Laurens .

After his return, Puelma received many awards in Chile, including a. Several times with the gold medal of the Salón Official in Santiago. The art critic counted him in the "group of the four masters" alongside Pedro Lira , Juan Francisco González and Alberto Valenzuela Llanos . Alfredo Helsby and Eucarpio Espinosa were among his students .

In 1907 he left Chile to live in France. There he died two years later, impoverished after persistent depression and a mental breakdown. The Centro Cultural de Las Condes in Santiago honored Puelma in 2009 with a solo exhibition. Many of his works are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes .
