Valerie Martin
Valerie Martin (born March 14, 1948 in Sedalia , Missouri ) is an American writer.
Life
Valerie Martin grew up in New Orleans . She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received an MFA in creative writing . She later taught creative writing at several universities and colleges. She has been a professor of English at Mount Holyoke College since 2011 .
The film Mary Reilly , made by Stephen Frears in 1996, is based on her retelling of the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde , the novel Mary Reilly previously received the Kafka Prize in 1990 . In 2001 she wrote Salvation: Scenes from the Life of St. Francis, a biography of Francis of Assisi . Her Roman Property received the Orange Prize in 2003 . In 2011 she received a Guggenheim scholarship .
