Valiasr Street
The Valiasr Street ( Persian خیابان ولیعصر, Khiyābān-e Valiasr ; in German also Waliasr-Straße or Waliasr-Allee ) is a street in Tehran . It extends over 19.3 km and leads from Tehran train station in the south to Tajrish Square in the north of the city.
The street lined with plane trees divides the metropolis into a western and an eastern part. It is considered to be one of the city's oldest main axes and at the same time forms its trading center.
The street was built under Reza Shah Pahlavi and was initially known as Pahlavi Street ( Khiyābān-e Pahlavi ). Even today this name is still in use among many Tehrans. After the 1979 revolution , it was changed to Mossadegh Street and later to its current form. Valiasr is Arabic and roughly means prince of time . This description refers to Muhammad al-Mahdī , the hidden Imam of the Shiites.
The street is the center of many activities in the city. Numerous shops and restaurants as well as a large number of parks such as Mellat Park or Laleh Park , expressways and cultural centers are directly adjacent.
history
The street reflects the development of the city: in 1870 it became the main axis of the city of Tehran. Rich bazaar traders built their houses here until 1950 . At that time, the street was still bordered by the city walls of Tehran. With Reza Shah's Haussmannian urban planning policy , the street became the center of the imperial district and developed into a second city center. The large Tehran families now left the south and settled in the new district. This was also due to the better quality of the drinking water, which at the time was still being conducted into the city in so-called Dschubs (a kind of brook ) from the Elburs Mountains . Another extension to the north and development through pipelines took place in the 1950s under Mohammad Reza Shah . In the 1970s, the villages of Vanak and Shemiran were incorporated into the city. With the establishment of chic restaurants such as Chattanooga and nightclubs , the westernization of Iran, which the Shah was striving for, was most clearly seen in these districts.
During the Provisional Government, the street was called Mossadegh. The street got its current name after the Islamic Revolution. Today the city reflects the social mix of Tehran society.
