The former Cistercian abbey Valsaintes ( Latin: Vallis sancta) forms a residential area in the commune of Simiane-la-Rotonde in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region ( France ). It is located around 33 km west of Forcalquier .

history

The monastery was founded in 1188 at the request of Rimbaud de Simiane as the only subsidiary of the Silvacane Abbey in the arid valley of the Calavon , but at the mouth of the Ruisseau d'Aiguebelle (stream "beautiful water"), which is at least rich in name. So it belonged to the filiation of the primary abbey of Morimond . The small monastery was destroyed by Raymond de Turenne and united with Silvacane in 1440. The abbey operated agriculture, cattle breeding (sheep and pigs on the pastures of the Grangie von Carniol) and a mill, as well as glass production. In 1668, by order of the Abbot of Morimond, the monastic community was relocated to the castle of Boulinette, parts of the architecture were removed from the old Valsaintes monastery. In connection with the French Revolution , the last monks were expelled from the castle. The castle no longer exists today.

buildings

The single-nave, pointed barrel vaulted church from the founding time with a straight choir closure, which is broken through by three long and narrow windows. There is a secular upper floor above the actual church space. The cloister building and the cloister are gone. However, intact buildings border the church. There are ruins of some outbuildings. A rosarium has been privately set up near the monastery complex since 1999.
