Van Toan Nguyen
Van Toan Nguyen (stage name Toan Anh ; * 1915 in Bac Ninh, Vietnam ; † May 14, 2009 in Ho Chi Minh City , Vietnam) was a Vietnamese writer , novelist , non-fiction book , poem and short story writer.
Life
Van Toan Nguyen was born in Thi Cau, Bac Ninh, Vietnam in 1915. He finished school after 12 years with a high school diploma . He had been a writer since 1934 , when his short stories were published in daily and weekly newspapers and magazines. His first works appeared under his real name, which at that time did not yet find approval with readers. His childhood love brought him to his stage name Toan Anh. He later met his wife, who bore him eleven children. However, this happiness did not seem to last. She died in 1969 of stomach problems of unknown cause, leaving Van Toan Nguyen and their eleven children, seven boys and four girls, alone. The youngest child was nine years old at the time. In addition to his writing career, Van Toan Nguyen worked as a physical education teacher and university professor in Huspr , Hanoi , Da Lat , Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City , among others . He taught literature and French at universities. In 2002 and 2004, two documentaries about his work and life in Vietnam appeared on Vietnamese television. To date, over 124 works by Nguyen have been published, including several novels of various genres, plays, non-fiction books, short stories, and volumes of poetry and letters. Van Toan Nguyen specialized in his works on life in Vietnam and the Vietnamese holidays in order to offer his readers the closest and realistic possible background. His works can also be found in libraries in America and Canada , and some in bookshops.
Van Toan Nguyen lived in Ho Chi Minh City with his eldest daughter in modest circumstances until his death . Many of his works are still unpublished because they still have to be edited.
