Vanessa buana is a butterfly ( butterfly ) of the genus Vanessa from the family of the noble butterfly (Nymphalidae), whichoccursonly on Sulawesi . Thespecific epithet is derived from the name of the locality of the type , the mountain Bua-Kraeng, which is now called Bawakaraeng .

features

Adults

Vanessa buana looks similar to the Indian admiral ( V. indica ), but has a much darker black-brown basic color in the basal half of the wings. In indica it is pale gray-red and has a matt sheen. On the forewings, the three black median spots, isolated in indica , of which the uppermost is in the cell, form a continuous band. The white apical and subapical spots and rows of dots are much smaller than in indica . The marginal edge of the hind wings is identical to indica . The spots in the red submarginal bandage have a helmet-like shape in buana and an elongated shape in indica .

Nothing is known about the pre-imaginal stages.

Geographical distribution

Vanessa buana occurs only on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi . The location of the holotype is given by Hans Fruhstorfer with South Celebes (South Sulawesi) on the Bua-Kraeng mountain at 4000 feet on the northern slope of the peak of Bonthain. Fruhstorfer misspelled the name of the summit, it is correctly called Wawokaraeng, today Bawakaraeng, the other summit of the Pik von Bantaeng (formerly Bonthain) is called Lompobattang . Nothing is known about the way of life.

Systematics

Vanessa buana was considered a subspecies of the Indian admiral ( V. indica ). Both genital examinations and DNA analyzes have shown that it is sufficiently differentiated from V. indica to be classified as a species, but it is very closely related to V. dilecta . It is not clear whether both are true species or an allopatric distribution of a species on Sulawesi and East Timor .
