Birgithe Kosović (born March 22, 1972 in Albertslund , Denmark ) is a Danish writer .

Life

Birgithe Kosović is the daughter of a Serb and a Danish. Her father comes from the Croatian city of Dubrovnik and wanted to emigrate to the USA via Denmark in 1970 . She studied Danish at the University of Copenhagen and then worked as a journalist, for example for Dagbladet Information , Månedsbladet Press and the Norwegian Morgenbladet .

Kosović made her debut as a writer with the Copenhagen publishing house Gyldendal in 1997 with the novel Legenden om Villa Valmarana . With her second novel Om natten i Jeursalem , published in 1999 , she had her first great success. Like her first book, this one is also written in the style of magical realism . It has been translated into several languages ​​including Spanish, Italian, French, Greek, and Swedish. After a translation by Verena Reichel , the book was published in German under the title Nachts in Jerusalem by Goldmann Verlag in Munich .

She celebrated her greatest success to date in 2010 with her semi-biographically inspired novel Det dobbelte land . Using the stories of her father and her own family, she researched the history for several years and learned Croatian in order to be able to read the literature of her ancestors. Influenced by his escape during the Croatian War, Kosović wrote a drama about revenge, death and torture during the war. For the book she was awarded the Weekendavisens litteraturpris endowed with 100,000 DKK , the DR Novel Prize endowed with DKK 25,000 and the Danske Bank Literature Prize endowed with DKK 300,000 .
