Albertslund Kommune is a Danish municipality in the Hovedstaden region and part of the capital area ( Hovedstadsområdet ). It extends over an area of 23.20 km², on which 27,731 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) live. The administrative headquarters are in Albertslund, a suburb of Copenhagen about 14 km to the west .

History and specifics of the city

In the course of just a few decades, Albertslund has grown from a village with around 3,000 inhabitants to a town with just under 30,000 inhabitants. The origins were the villages of Herstedøster, Vridsløselille and Risby, once small independent communities with agriculture and horticulture as their main occupation, symbolized by a rooster in the Albertslund city coat of arms.

With the construction of over 1500 atrium and row houses in South Albertslund at the beginning of the 1960s, social housing construction and the move to Albertslund got under way. Almost 30 larger and smaller residential complexes are now distributed all around the community with a total of over 6000 social and almost 6000 owner-occupied apartments. Hyldespjældet has almost 400 apartments with 1, 2 and 3 floors.

The municipality was created in the course of the Danish municipal reform in 1970 by amalgamating the Sognkommunen Herstedvester Sogn , Herstedøster Sogn and Opstandelseskirkens Sogn , initially under the name "Herstedernes Kommune". In 1973 the name was officially changed to "Albertslund Kommune", as the Danish Ministry of the Interior did not want to accept a commune name in plural form.

In the mid-1970s there were around 6,700 pupils in the ten schools, in 1988 there were only 4,500. As a result, adult lessons could increasingly take place in schools and new requirements, for example for specialist rooms for school children, could be met. Within a few years the number of day care centers for children and young people up to the age of 18 rose to eighty. Since then, the number has decreased somewhat due to the falling number of children. Since 1972, all day nurseries, kindergartens, recreational homes and clubs have been in municipal hands.

The town of Albertslund has around 1200 large and small businesses, with the largest concentration in the industrial center of Herstedøster.

Two thirds of Albertslund's floor area are man-made green spaces. The largest area, Vestskoven (the western forest) with 1500 ha, has been gradually planted since 1967.

Albertslund Centrum, the largest in the city, includes a shopping center, town hall and a cultural center "Albertslundhuset" with a main library, communal cinemas and a theater, concert and congress hall for 1200 visitors. It is a municipal owned center in Denmark.

In Albertslund, cyclists and pedestrians are completely separated. The community has as many kilometers of paths as roads, namely 65 km. Since 2012 Albertslund starting point of the first completed bike path Quick ( cykelsupersti , dt about. Bicycle Super Path), which from here leads to the center of Copenhagen.

State prison in Vridsløselille . In the Danish film series Olsenbande , Egon Olsen ( Ove Sprogøe ) always walked the way from the main gate of the prison after his release .

The municipality is located between Glostrup and Taastrup and 5 km from the Baltic Sea (Vallensbæk). In addition, the Roskildevej runs through the district and the E47 / E55 motorway passes Albertslund at a distance of 2 km, which means that there are convenient transport links.

Albertslund was originally founded as an industrial area, only the housing prices in central Copenhagen forced many to move to the outlying districts such as Albertslund. The mayor, who founded the district in 1972, is still in office, which can be heard in his speech about "his" district.

When it comes to culture, Albertslund is very active and organizes many folk festivals and cultural nights on the central market square.

In Albertslund there is the (correctional facility) at Herstedvester (prisoner undergoing psychiatric treatment) and the state prison in Vridsløselille , which became known from the Danish burglar series Olsenbande . Today the prison is difficult to access after an outbreak caused by a truck ramming the wall. The street leading to the prison was renamed from Vridsløselille State Prison (actually Fængselsvej: Prison Street) to Egon Olsens Vej (Egon Olsen Street) after Ove Sprogøe's death in 2004.

In 2007 the municipality received the Nordic Council's Nature and Environment Prize because it has established environmental work among citizens and companies. B. halved carbon dioxide emissions in the community.
