Vanguard Records

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vanguard Records is a music label founded in 1950 by Seymour Solomon and his younger brother Maynard Solomon . Initially intended as a label for classical music , it is now better known for its blues and folk releases in the 1960s.

history

Under the leadership of John P. Hammond from 1953 to 1958 a series with jazz was published under the name Jazz Showcase .

From the mid-1950s, the spectrum was expanded, so that Vanguard took artists such as Paul Robeson and The Weavers under contract. Furthermore, recordings were published with younger artists such as Joan Baez and Richard Fariña (see list below).

For the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth , the label Nixa Records acquired licenses from Vanguard Records.

The label released little music from the mid-1970s. In 1985 the label was sold to the Welk Music Group . The classical music catalog was sold back to Seymour Solomon, which is published under the name Vanguard Classics Music.

Sub-labels

  • Flip Records was a short-lived sub-label specializing in the release of new wave and dance music. After two publications, however, this was discontinued.
  • Bach Guild appeared on this label, for example with the conductor Felix Prohaska , a series of recordings of Bach music such as cantatas with Austrian interpreters.
