Felix Prohaska

Felix Prohaska (born May 16, 1912 in Vienna ; † March 29, 1987 ibid) was an Austrian conductor and professor of musicology in Hanover.

Felix Prohaska was the son of the composer and professor Carl Prohaska (1869–1927). He received his music education from his father, he studied piano with Eduard Steuermann , theory with Egon Kornauth and Hans Gál .

Professional background

Felix Prohaska worked as a "repetiteur" at the Graz Opera from 1936–1939, as a conductor at the operas in Duisburg 1939–41, in Strasbourg 1941–43, Prague , Salzburg and at the Vienna Volksoper 1946–55. From 1955 to 1961 Prohaska was Deputy General Music Director in Frankfurt am Main and first Kapellmeister at the Frankfurt Opera . From 1961 to 1969 he headed the Academy / University of Music and Theater Hanover and was also a professor there until 1975. He also worked at the Volksoper in Vienna 1964–67 and from 1965–74 at the Lower Saxony State Opera Hanover. For a short time he also taught at the Vienna Music Academy and the Vienna Conservatory . Many recordings of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach , Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Franz Schubert and Gustav Mahler were made for the Vanguard Classics label under his direction .
