Vannius (Quaden)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vannius was a king appointed by Drusus Caesar (reign 19-50 AD) of the Suebian tribe of the Quadi .

After the smashing of the Marcomanni empire of Marbod and the flight of the short-term successor Catualda , Drusus Caesar set the Rome-friendly Quaden Vannius as rex over the Germanic followers of both rulers who were initially held by him and later settled on the northern bank of the Danube . However, this client king soon sought an expansion of the territory he ruled, obtained military reinforcement from auxiliary troops of the Jazygens and built refuges; he also carried out great forays. Vannius' behavior meant that he came into conflict with the tribes of the Hermunduren and Lugier who settled near his empire . In addition, his nephews (sister sons ) Vangio and Sido rebelled against him in 50/51 AD . Despite his request that Emperor Claudius support him , Vannius received no help from the Pannonian governor Sextus Palpellius Hister in the decisive military conflict . Vannius had to admit defeat. He and his companions were taken up by Palpellius on his Danube fleet and were assigned residences in Pannonia .
