Vanzolini's bald-faced saki ( Pithecia vanzolinii ) is a species of primate from the New World monkey group that occurs in the southwest of the Brazilian state of Amazonas between the Rio Juruá and the Rio Tarauacá . To the west is the occurrence of Pithecia inusta . The species is little known and researched. The description was based on museum bellows. Observations in the wild by scientists have hardly taken place so far. In 2017 a living specimen was seen for the first time in 80 years.

features

Males and females have a blackish back dotted with a few light, white to cream-colored hair tips and a bushy black tail. The arms and legs of the females are whitish-yellow, those of the males are light yellow-brown. The hair of the males is thicker than that of the females and is wavy. The hands are white in both sexes. The face is hairless, the hairless facial skin is black. The mouth region is bordered by white or cream-colored lines that are slightly wider in females than in males.

Vanzolini's bald-faced Saki reaches a head-trunk length of 36 to 41.5 cm (males) or 35.5 to 42 cm (females) and has a 40 to 52 cm long tail.

Systematics

The shape was described in 1987 by the mammalogen Philip Hershkovitz as Pithecia irrorata vanzolinii , i.e. as a subspecies of the bald-faced Saki ( P. irrorata ). The specific epithet vanzolinii is a dedication name in honor of the Brazilian zoologist Paulo Vanzolini . In 2014, in a revision of the Sakis , Vanzolini's bald faced Saki was raised to the rank of an independent species.
