history

Varick Street was named after Richard Varick , who was Mayor of New York City from 1789 to 1801 and owned land here.

In 1917, Varick Street was widened during the expansion of Seventh Avenue. Several buildings were demolished for this - including St. John's Chapel , which made the construction of the IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line possible.

Local transport

The M20 bus route runs the full length of Varick Street - from its beginning on Seventh Avenue to its end on West Broadway. In addition, the M21 bus route crosses Varick Street at two points: at Houston Street to the west and at Spring Street to the east.

The following subway stops are on Varick Street: Houston Street (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line) , Franklin Street (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line) and Canal Street (IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line) .
