Vasif Adıgözəlov

Vasif oğlu Zülfüqar Adıgözəlov (also Vasif Adigözälov ; Russian Васиф Зульфугар оглы Адыгезалов * 28. July 1935 in Baku , Azerbaijan SSR , Soviet Union ; 15. September 2006 in Baku, Azerbaijan ) was an Azerbaijani composer and music educator . He received the honorary title of People's Artist of the Azerbaijani SSR in 1989 .

Life

Vasif Adıgözəlov's father was the Azerbaijani singer Zülfü Adıgözəlov. At the age of ten he received his first piano lessons at the Bulbul Music School at the Baku Conservatory. In 1953 he began studying at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in Baku. He studied composition with Qara Qarayev and piano with Simuzar Guliyev. In 1959 he graduated. From 1958 he was a music editor at the State Radio and Television Committee. He became the head of the A.Zeynallı Music School in Baku. From 1972 he taught in a leading position at the Azerbaijan State Conservatory in Baku. Here he headed the department for choral conducting. In 1973 he was awarded the honorary title Заслуженный деятель искусств , Honored Artist . For many years he was the director of the Bakı Musiqi Texnikumunda [Baku Music Technology Center], artistic director of the Azerbaijani State Song and Dance Ensemble and the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic Society. In 1990 he was elected Executive Secretary of the Azerbaijani Composers' Association. In the same year he received the State Prize and in 1995 he was awarded the Şöhrət Order . From 2000 until his death in 2006 he was chairman of the Azerbaijani Composers Association. Vasif Adıgözəlov is the brother of the singer Rauf Adıgözəlov (1940-2002) and the father of the conductor Yalçın Adıgözəlov (* 1959).

Works (selection)

Vasif Adıgözəlov's compositional work showed itself in different genres. He wrote the two operas Ölülər [Death] and Natəvan [Nathan], six musical comedies, symphonies, symphonic poems and instrumental concerts . In addition, he wrote various chamber music compositions, more than a hundred songs and romances, as well as drama and film scores. A focus of his work was also on piano music. In the 1990s he wrote the three oratorios Qarabağ şikəstəsi , Çanaqqala , which thematizes the Battle of Gallipoli , and Qəm karvanı [Caravan of Mourning] .

Reception and commemoration

On the occasion of his eightieth birthday, a festival in honor of Vasif Adıgözəlov was held in Baku in October 2015. The program included concerts with works by the composer. In addition to several concerts, his opera Natəvan was performed in the Academic Opera and Ballet Theater on October 30th .
