General Vasile Atanasiu

Vasile Atanasiu (born April 25, 1886 in Târgovişte , Dâmbovița County , Kingdom of Romania ; † June 6, 1964 in Bucharest , People's Republic of Romania ) was a Romanian general . During the Second World War he took as commanding general of the Fourth Army ( Armata a 4-a Română ) belonging III. Corps in the Battle of Odessa (August 8 to October 16, 1941) and in the Western Carpathian Operation (January 12 to February 18, 1945).

Life

After attending school, Vasile Atanasiu completed an officer training at the Military Cadet Institute (Școala Fiilor de Militari) in Iași and from 1905 at the School of Artillery and Engineering Troops (Școala de Ofițeri de Artilerie și Geniu) in Bucharest and found numerous uses as an officer after graduation in 1907 as well as staff officer of the artillery . After attending the Supreme War School (Școala Superioară de Război) and his promotion to Lieutenant Colonel (Locotenent Colonel) on April 1, 1920, he became head of the operations office of the General Staff and then served as head of the 4th Section of the General Staff between 1926 and 1928. After March 25, 1928 Colonel (Colonel) had been promoted, he was from 1928 to 1929, first of assistive inspector general of artillery, and then from 1929 to 1931 commander of the artillery regiment in the artillery training center (Centrului de Instructie al Artileriei) . This was followed by a position as head of the secretariat of the Supreme National Defense Council (Consiliului Superior al Apărării) from 1931 to 1934 and as assistant commander of the artillery training center in 1934, before he was commander of the 19th artillery brigade (Brigăzii 19 artillery) between 1934 and 1935 .

After his promotion to Brigadier General (General de Brigada) on October 18, 1935, Atanasiu was again head of the Secretariat of the Supreme National Defense Council between 1935 and 1937 and then commander of the 12th Infantry Division (Diviziei 12 Infantry) from 1937 to 1940 . He was promoted to Major General (General Maior) on June 6, 1940 and was during the Second World War 1941 only Commanding General of the II Corps (Corpului 2 Armată) and then between June 22, 1941 and March 20, 1943 Commanding General of the fourth army ( Armata a 4-a Română ) belonging to the III. Corps (Corpului 3 Armată) . In this capacity he took part in the Battle of Odessa (August 8 to October 16, 1941) and was promoted to Lieutenant General (General Locotenent) on July 18, 1942 . In the following period he was between March 20, 1943 and February 12, 1945, initially as head of the main artillery department (șef al Direcției Superioare a Artileriei) inspector general of the artillery and then from February 13, 1945 to April 30, 1946, commander-in-chief of the First Army (Armata a 1-a Română) . During this time he also took part in the West Carpathian Operation (January 12 to February 18, 1945). He was promoted to general on April 11, 1945 , this promotion being dated back to April 5, 1945, and last served from 1946 until his retirement on January 1, 1948, Inspector General de Armată .
