Vasilis Rapanos

Vasilis Rapanos ( Greek Βασίλης Ράπανος , also Vassilis Th. Rapanos , * 1947 in Kos ) is a Greek economist. He was supposed to be finance minister in the government of Prime Minister Andonis Samaras , but did not take up his post due to illness.

Life

During the military dictatorship , Rapanos was involved in the resistance , he was arrested in 1969 and spent four years in Greek prisons.

Rapanos studied business administration and economics at the Athens University of Economics (then Athens School of Economics - Ανωτάτη Σχολή Οικονομικών και Εμπορικών Επιστημών). There he completed his training in 1975; He received his Masters in Economics from Lakehead University in Canada in 1977 and his PhD from Queen's University in Canada in 1982 .

career

He worked at the Center for Planning and Economic Research (KEPE) in Greece, first as a research assistant and later as a researcher. Since 1992 he has taught economic analysis and public economics at the University of Athens . His research interests were in the area of ​​taxes, the role of the state in the economy and the finances of the European Union.

In addition to his scientific and research activities, Rapanos worked in various positions for the Greek state, such as advisor to the Ministry of Finance, head of the Permanent Representation of Greece to the European Union and Deputy of the Permanent Representative of the Mission of Greece to the OECD . From 1995 to 1998 he was first deputy governor and then governor of the National Mortgage Bank of Greece until the bank merged with the National Bank of Greece in 1998 . From 1998 to 2000 he was chairman of the board of OTE . From 2000 to 2004 he was Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers in the Ministry of Economy and Finance. He was also President of the National Association of Greek Banks and most recently Chairman of the NBG. During the formation of a coalition government made up of Nea Dimokratia , PASOK and Dimokratiki Aristera , he was appointed finance minister as a non-party expert but close to PASOK.

On the way to his scheduled swearing-in as finance minister, Rapanos fell weak on June 22nd, 2012 and was hospitalized. After another three days, he decided not to take up the ministerial office. Political reasons were also suspected behind his withdrawal.

Rapanos had harshly criticized the Greek financial policy in a scientific publication in 2011.
