Vat (unit)
Vat was the English measure of volume for coal . The measure is considered to be the ton for hard coal . But coal was traded according to bushel or chaldron , the more common measures. The bushel for coal was calculated at 2815.5 cubic inches for the Imperial bushel and not 2217.6 cubic inches for the Winchester bushel. It should be noted that there is a difference of around a quarter in the measurement systems. The fraud was soon stopped by the weight trade.
- 1 Vat = 3 bags about 327 liters or 64 kilograms
- 4 vats = 1 chaldron = 36 bushels (coals) = 12 sacks = 144 pecks about 1307 liters or 256 kilograms
