Vedanta Resources is a British mining company headquartered in London . The group mines aluminum , copper , zinc and lead in India . Vedanta operates one copper mine in Zambia and two in Australia .

The group includes the companies Bharat Aluminum Company , Konkola Copper Mines , Sterlite Industries and Madras Aluminum Company . The founder of Sterlite Industries and Vedanta Resources is Indian billionaire Anil Agarwal, who started out as a scrap dealer in Bombay in the mid-1970s. Forbes magazine estimates his net worth at approximately $ 6.4 billion.

In mid-August 2010 it was announced that Vedanta Resources would take over 60 percent of the crude oil production company Cairn India for 9.6 billion US dollars.

criticism

In 2009, Reprisk ranked the company in 2nd place in the list of “Environmental and Social Issues Most Controversial Multinational Enterprises”, and in 2010 3rd place. In 2012, 47 indigenous Indian villagers were arrested in India for fighting pollution protested in their country. The Vedanta copper smelter in Thoothukudi ( India ) is only 14 kilometers away from the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park and is still to be expanded to become the largest copper smelter in the world. On May 22, 2018, police opened fire during a demonstration against the expansion, killing 13 demonstrators. As a result, the company was closed for the time being.
