The Velký Zvon (German Plattenberg ) is a peak in the middle Upper Palatinate Forest .

It is located on the Czech-German border in the Okres Domažlice about two kilometers northeast or north of the two desert areas Pleš ( Plöß ) and Václav ( Wenzelsdorf ) and 2.5 kilometers north of the desert areaügellohe . The Weingartnerfels with the Bohemian Forest observation tower rises to the south .

At the top there is a radar and radio surveillance tower of the Czech armed forces . This was built during the Cold War and is still in use. Today the tower houses radio systems for monitoring military flight safety in and around the Czech Republic. The strict isolation of the area as a restricted military area has been lifted, although the summit is still not accessible. From the tower there is visual contact with the former surveillance positions on the peaks of Havran (Rabenberg) in the north and Čerchov (Schwarzkopf) in the south.

Notes in chronicles and local finds show that in earlier centuries there was a castle on the summit. The area was also used intensively by the population in consultation with the local princes. Finds, remains and place names in the vicinity are evidence that iron mining took place. In addition, the remains of the old wall were discovered as part of military construction work, but they were not examined in more detail.

Inscriptions on the Kotz stones on the Plattenberg

Kotzian stones

The Zvon was under the rule of those von Kotz, who had their residence in the nearby Heiligkreuz . In the 19th century the summit of the Zvon was not forested, but designed like a park with sidewalks, stairs and seating. One lookout point was called Kotz'sche Aussicht (Kocova vyhlídka). Between 1800 and 1936, inscriptions were carved into the rocks of this park landscape in various places. The authors of these inscriptions were not only the members of the Kotz family but also their friends, hunters, glaziers and the pastor of Plöss .

On the south side of the Zvon, directly below the summit, there is a protruding rock outcrop called Kotz'sche Steine (Kocovy Kameny).

On the west side there are several plaques carved into the stone from the years 1800 to 1896. These bear inscriptions that remind of joint excursions by befriended nobles from the Kotz von Dobrz and Trauttmansdorff families to the Zvon.

You can get to these stones by going up the military road to the top of the Zvon. Shortly before the iron gate that leads to the restricted military area, turn right across the forest to the rock nose with the inscriptions about 100 meters away. ( Location )
