The modified bite insect ( Platycleis (Modestana) modesta ) is a long- feeler insect from the subfamily of the Tettigoniinae within the superfamily of the grasshopper .

features

The modified bite insect reaches a body length of 16 to 21 millimeters and is mostly green in color, but brown-colored specimens also occur. The wings are greatly shortened, the forewings are marked with dark spots. Due to the mostly green color and the shortened wings it is very similar to the species of the genus Metrioptera. The pronotum is rounded in side view without a recess at the rear edge, this is broadly lined with yellowish, the sides of the pronotum are sharply contrasted and darkly colored. A central keel of the pronotum is not recognizable (difference to Platycleis see str.). The ovipositor of the female is weakly and evenly curved and whitish in color, the subgenital plate is deeply cut out at the back. The cerci of the male are toothed in the tip third, the tenth tergite has two pointed processes that are widely separated. The hind legs are very long in both sexes, the hind legs reach 3.8 to 4 times the pronotum length in the female and up to 4.1 times the pronotum length in the male.

Way of life and distribution

The modified bite can be found on taller meadows and bushland. It is mostly found on herbaceous plants or bushes.

The species is endemic to the Balkan Peninsula. Its range extends from the southern foothills of the Julian Alps and Istria across the Croatian Adriatic coast to Bosnia and Herzegovina . it is most widespread in Croatia. It occurs in the extreme northeast of Italy ( Trieste ). Adults appear from July and live until early September.

Taxonomy

The species was in 1853 by Franz Xaver fever under the name Platycleis modestus described . It belongs to the subgenus Modestana , which is now listed by many editors in the genus rank, the species is then called Modestana modesta .
