biography

Verónica Ibsel Domínguez was born on October 19, 1961 in Guayaquil ( Ecuador ). There she first studied piano in her hometown, then she completed a degree in architecture. This took her to Germany in 1985, where she obtained her diploma in Frankfurt. She has been living with her family in Bad Vilbel for some time . She is the first representative of plastic art to dedicate a cycle of her art to a “study of laughter”.

The focus of her artistic work, to which she has dedicated herself since the eighties, is the human being, especially in his interaction with others. She approaches her socially and socially critical topics analytically and communicates them in exhibitions, installations and art events.

She implements her works - pictures, objects and assemblages - in her very own style, both abstractly and figuratively . She works equally in acrylic, oil and various mixed techniques.

The current cycle “Study of Laughter” as well as the previously edited cycles “Long live the color of life”, “Zeitwende” and “The simple wish to be” were exhibited in several cities in Germany as well as in the Netherlands and Austria. Her works are represented in many important private art collections in these countries.

Part of the project “The Courage to Laugh” by Verónica Ibsel Domínguez for the art festival 48 Hours Neukölln 2014 in Berlin was an art event that took place at Alexanderplatz . “The same action was also carried out in several subway lines. For the first time, a vernissage had taken place on the street and in the subway. ”The slogan of this art event was“ infected with life ”. Pedestrians and onlookers in these urban squares were infected by the life and happiness of the laughing people in the pictures. For the artist and the helping actors, however, it was the works of art that allowed themselves to be infected by urban life on these streets, in the squares, in the subways and by passers-by. "In contrast to the assignment to the 'tabernacles of art' (art museums and privileged exhibition spaces), where there are 'sacred art' to which admirers - devout pilgrims of art - rush to only with the aim of admiring them." ( Quotes: Verónica Ibsel Dominguez)

style

Your pictures captivate with their bright and cheerful colors, moving surfaces and a generous and impasto application of paint. "The strong plasticity of the colors and the forms radiate an intense liveliness in the works." They have their own aura, which instantly convey liberating feelings and happiness to the viewer.

In the “Study of Laughter” she wants to convey the magic of the moment with the power and charisma of spontaneous laughter. For this purpose, the artist developed a special painting technique, whereby she applies the paint directly from the paint tubes to the canvas without sketches or preliminary drawings. In doing so, she models the faces using paint as a modeling medium. The plasticity gained in this way brings about a liveliness of the expression and a change in it through different shadow effects depending on the incidence of light. The color explosions on the canvas fuel the radiance of this contagious laugh.

Laughter in art

Laughter in art

“In studying laughter, I am interested in spontaneous, magical and fruitful laughter as one of the most honest expressions of our essence. The laughter that we yearn for more and more and that seems even more invigorating in the current printing times and global activities ... "

- Verónica Ibsel Domínguez

The fact that Verónica Ibsel Domínguez explicitly deals with “Laughing in Art” is special, as depictions of people laughing are rather rare in classical art, and when someone laughs, as for example with Leonardo's Mona Lisa , they are part of it extensive and sustained discourse developed on the occasion of this emotion. In a rough overview of the history of art , one can say that the depiction of laughter from antiquity up to the 17th century had rather negative connotations. It was viewed as either undignified (Plato), unchristian, vicious, or degrading. It was not until Dutch portrait painting, for example with Frans Hals or Rembrandt , that artists began to appreciate laughter as an emotion.

Laughter, as portrayed in Verónica Ibsel Domínguez's work, conveys a permeability, a moment of rapture and detachment that allows the rigidity and straightforwardness of everyday life to be forgotten for a short time.
