The history of the House of Brannenburg goes back to the year 1390. But it was only when it opened on May 31, 1914, as the house of the first Bavarian postal union, the "Association of Bavarian Post and Telegraph Personals" (abbreviated as "Bavarian Post Association"), a house of trade union educational work. In this respect, it can look back on 100 years of eventful history and is a very traditional house of trade union educational work .

The house of the Association of Bavarian Post and Telegraph Personnel

As early as 1882 there were first proven attempts to organize postal workers in Bavaria. Various staff associations emerged, such as the "Bavarian Postman Association". However, it was not until February 25, 1900 that the nationwide "Association of Bavarian Post and Telegraph Personnel" was founded. In 1913, he was the first Bavarian postal union to buy the "Erdsegen" house in order to create a rest home for union members. The money of 110,000 gold marks was raised, in addition to the association's savings, primarily through share certificates that were sold to the members. After minor renovations, the house was officially opened on May 31, 1914. It had 28 guest rooms, had an economic license and was very well received by its members.

War and Weimar Period

The First World War began just eight weeks after it opened . This had a major impact on the operation of the house. Employees who were on vacation were recalled and new vacations were no longer approved. Later the house was made completely available to the Bavarian Ministry of War for wounded soldiers. During the Weimar period , with the incorporation of the Bavarian Post into the Deutsche Reichspost on April 1, 1920, the two unions Bayerischer Postverband and Deutsche Postgewerkschaft merged to form a single organization with headquarters in Munich. The house was transferred to the ownership of the Bavarian State Association of the German Postal Union. With the help of additional share certificates and two lotteries, the rear part of the main building was expanded to increase the capacity. In 1924 the front part of the building was rebuilt as it is practically still visible today. The basis for this was the plan by the architect Karl Kergl .

Fascism and Retransfer

After the dissolution of the free trade unions by the National Socialists in 1933, the building was transferred to the Nazi organization " Reichsbund der Deutschen Officialten ". In 1940 the house was sold to the Deutsche Reichspost for 350,000 Reichsmarks. From this the house was used as a hospital during the Second World War . After the Second World War it was used as an alternative operation for the Munich-Schwabing Hospital. After the Nazi dictatorship and negotiations with the reparation authorities, the new owner of the house was the successor to the original owner, the “Economic Association of Postal Staff in Bavaria”. This was the predecessor of the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft (DPG), which was reorganized according to the principle of the unified union .

From the training and recreation home of the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft ...

For a long time, the house was an education and recreation center for the German Postal Union.

As early as 1946, the “Union of Railway and Post Personnel” was founded, which was followed by the spin-off of the “State Union of Post and Telecommunications Bavaria” in Regensburg. The first chairman of the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft, district administration Munich, Karl Ruhland, was also chairman of the "Economic Association" as the owner of the house. The house was reopened on June 4, 1951, and commercial operations began on June 12. Ten years after it was sold to the Reichspost, the property returned to the “Economic Association of Postal Staff in Bavaria” on December 19, 1950. The necessary extensive renovation measures could only be completed in 1963. Only then could it be fully cultivated again. In 1969 the house was handed over to the trust company of the Deutsche Postgewerkschaft.

Although initially only the Bavarian and Palatinate districts of the DPG acted as owners, the Brannenburg house developed into a central conference venue and important seminar location for the entire German postal union. Initially, no separate rooms were provided for seminars. The seminar design took place on the basis of presentations in the form of "three-day seminars". The Brannenburg house was only able to cope with the fact that the seminar was run with a number of renovations and extensions, especially in the 1980s and 1990s. The basis for this was the construction of the central wing with its two seminar rooms. Although many important meetings and conferences were held in the Brannenburg house and a variable conference wing and the "glass house" were specially built for this purpose, the Brannenburg house, in contrast to the central education center of the DPG in Gladenbach (Hesse), had only very late (from 2003) - and only very briefly - educational support. As a result, almost no conceptual impulses for educational work in the DPG came from Brannenburg. However, the house was also very popular with the membership for recreational purposes, often in combination with educational measures. And that, although there was never the possibility of special educational leave in Bavaria .

... to the ver.di educational center Haus Brannenburg

Since 2003, Haus Brannenburg has been one of the ten central educational institutions of the ver.di union with its own educational offer and focus. In addition to central offers in the field of political education, seminars for company interest groups are also offered. The latter are organized and carried out by ver.di b + b (education and advice) in an internal office . The ver.di Haus Brannenburg education center is also part of Department 04 at the federal level, which is responsible for trade union education .

The focus on sustainability

Haus Brannenburg was and is subject to the “profile building process” of the Ver.di central educational institutions. The previous focus on international affairs, communication and conflicts as well as team and committee work were supplemented in 2010 by the focus on sustainability. Since this year, the topic of sustainability and sustainable development has been actively addressed through the “Brannenburg Forum for Sustainable Development”. The sustainability forum in particular has a nationwide response in Ver.di. Haus Brannenburg also wants to respond to this focus structurally and set standards. For example, through a zero emissions concept.
