The Verandering in Bremerhaven

The Verandering (change) is the gaff ketch of the Bremen Evangelical Church . She is a flat bottom sailing clipper built in 1898 .

history

The Verandering was built in Raamsdonkveer (Netherlands) in 1898 as a two-master for cruising across the tidal flats and the Sund for a German shipowner.

Originally the verandering had an elliptical stern . In 1930 the ship was sold to Groningen and, due to the size of the locks, the elliptical stern was replaced by a straight one. It was converted to a one-master and equipped with a side screw. The side screw was of a on the foredeck lying Deutz driven -Motor. In 1950, a compressed air-started MWM two-cylinder engine with 44 hp was installed in the ship . In this condition, a couple bought the flat-bottomed ship in the 1970s. They brought the verandering back to its original condition as a two-master with hatch covers with tarpaulin cover . The hold was prepared as a lounge for the guests and the side screw was removed.

In 1978 the ship was sold and constantly chartered out. It was sold again in the early 1980s. The owners at that time began to technically upgrade the ship in accordance with the requirements and rules for the Watts and Sundays that are now in force. As a result, the Verandering was one of the few flat-bottomed ships that could continue to sail in its original sailing area in the wadden area.

After another change of owner, the Bremen Evangelical Church bought the ship in 2001 for the Evangelical Youth Bremen. Since then, the ship has been sailing with church and non-church groups for over 140 days a year.

Project today

The Evangelical Youth Bremen started the project Angels have wings in 2001 - we need sails! with the Verandering . The aim is to make positive changes to people who sail the ship and who look after it, to make new experiences possible and to have a community-building effect.

A group of around 85 volunteers from all age groups from Bremen and the surrounding area has been looking after the Verandering since 2001. This includes volunteer boaters and skippers for weekend and week trips on the Lower Weser and in the Wadden Sea . During the summer vacation, the ship is sailing in the Baltic Sea .
