Association of Democratic European Muslims

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of Democratic-European Muslims (VDEM) claims to represent the socio-political and religious interests of democratic Muslims who have a cosmopolitan and liberal understanding of the religion of Islam .

history

The VDEM was founded on May 4, 2010 in Aachen in the historic Löwenstein house by 15 founding members. Well-known members are the political scientist Bassam Tibi , the Islam theologian Reza Hajatpour and the Islam-critical social scientist Necla Kelek . President was Eyüp Özgün selected.

The preamble of the VDEM declares the VDEM to be an Islamic-religious association: “1. We believe in the one God -ALLAH- and that Muhammad is his servant and messenger. 2. The Koran is the book of orientation for us. He confirms, guards, and maintains the previous divine revelations. "

For the VDEM, Hadi Schmidt-El Khaldi takes part in the German Islamic Conference of the Federal Government.

Positions

The preamble defines a progressive understanding of Islam: “3. God's basic commandments were and are the same forever, they do not change. What changes are the specific versions. Depending on the spatio-temporal and socio-cultural circumstances, these commandments must be applied differently so that their original meaning and purpose can actually be fulfilled. 4. At the time of its promulgation, Islam was a progressive and socially just religion; it was at the height of the science known at the time. As a true divine religion, it is open to the knowledge of science. With it, a society can develop into a cosmopolitan, solidarity and subsidiarity-based, socially just, non-profit-oriented and truly human community. "

The president of the VDEM, Eyüp Özgün, said: “The VDEM is supposed to represent the socio-political and religious interests of democratic Muslims who have a cosmopolitan and liberal understanding of the religion of Islam.” Reza Hajatpour explained the founding: “It's about us the secular spirit around young Muslims who are looking for their own identity in Europe and no longer want to refer to the culture and tradition of their parents' country of origin. "

Together with the Liberal Islamic Federation (LIB), the VDEM criticized in 2011 that the advisory board for Islamic religious education in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia was only made up of representatives from traditional Islamic associations.

criticism

Muhammad Sameer Murtaza criticized islam.de for the fact that associations like the VDEM might just want to put a “theological label” on a life plan. Possibly it is just a question of a “conscious Christianization of Islam”. Although they are theologically monotheists , philosophically they are dualists , and their “intellectual gimmicks” are far removed from any scientific level.
