The Association of German Sport Fishermen e. V. ( VDSF ) was until 2013 the larger of the two umbrella organizations for German anglers, alongside the German Anglers' Association (DAV). The VDSF was founded in 1946 and was based in Offenbach. In June 2013 the VDSF was merged into the German Anglers' Association .

Historically, the VDSF was the federal republican umbrella organization and the DAV was the umbrella organization of the GDR, whereby later both associations were represented in all German states. The VDSF consisted of 23 regional associations with around 7,000 clubs, in which a total of around 670,000 members are organized. The VDSF was a non-profit organization and, according to Section 59 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act, a recognized nature conservation association .

He was active both nationally and internationally and was a member of the German Fisheries Association , the German Olympic Sports Confederation , the Association of German Water Protection, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources , the Federal Association for Environmental Consulting, the European Anglers Alliance, in the Confédération Internationale de la Pêche Sportive, in the international casting sport federation , in the Association of German Fisheries Administration Officials and Fisheries Scientists as well as in the international association of limnologists.

In addition to the right to (properly) catching fish, the Association of German Sport Fishermen also saw the protection of running and still waters as its task. According to our own definition, this included the protection of the animals and plants in their habitat as well as the protection of the waters and the nature surrounding them . Specifically, the anglers got involved in the VDSF

The VDSF has been involved in the selection for the fish of the year since 1991 and in the selection of the river landscape of the year since 2000 .

On February 15, 2013, at an extraordinary general meeting, the VDSF decided to merge with the DAV to form the German Angling Association (DAFV). On November 17, 2012, the VDSF's first vote on a merger failed because two votes were missing for the required two-thirds majority. Some anglers in the VDSF suspected that DAV officials had been working with the Stasi , causing problems . In addition, some of the DAV's fishing competitions were rejected because they saw themselves more as a nature conservation association. Various attempts to merge the two German nationwide fishing associations had failed since 1990 due to the personal dislike of the respective presidents.
