tasks and goals

The association represents the common interests of this branch nationally and internationally and informs its members about all current issues concerning the industry.

On January 17, 1951, the forerunner organization, the "Central Association of the Sweet Must and Fruit Beverage Industry e. V. ”founded in Wiesbaden . His task at the time was to help the industry out of the post-war development period by bundling interests. In the course of a reorganization and amendment of the statutes, it was renamed “Verband der deutschen Fruchtsaft-Industrie eV V. “renamed.

The association uses the packaging testing facility of the brewery testing and training institute as a contract laboratory for beverage containers.

The VdF in a European context

The lobbying work for the German fruit juice industry on a European level plays a special role today. The VdF is involved in the European fruit juice association AIJN (Association of the Industry of Juices and Nectars from Fruits and Vegetables of the European Union). The members of the AIJN are 19 national fruit juice associations from the EU member states.

Many German experts have a function as chairman or member of a working group or committee. The aim of the VdF's collaboration with the AIJN is to ensure the quality standards for fruit juices and fruit nectars.

The International Federation of Fruit Juice Producers was founded in 1949 by the major associations of European fruit juice manufacturers. In 2019 the IFU celebrated its 70th anniversary. It now has over 180 members (professional associations, companies and universities). In addition, the IFU is also an official advisory member for the Codex Alimentarius.

VdF reusable system

Before the association's own reusable system was introduced in 1972 , every fruit juice manufacturer worked with its own bottles, which were not interchangeable. The coexistence of different reusable systems made it difficult for retailers and consumers to return empties. Especially for small and medium-sized companies in the fruit juice industry, the VdF reusable system introduced nationwide at the beginning of the 1970s has led to an enormous rationalization of the return of empties.

Consumers, retailers and manufacturers have had a modular system with stackable crates and reusable glass bottles in different sizes at their disposal for over 40 years. This has increased the willingness of the trade to sell fruit juices and nectars in returnable bottles, to offer them in crates and to take them back again. Today the VdF reusable system is used by around 300 companies in the fruit juice industry in Germany. Since the euro was introduced on January 1, 2002, the deposit per bottle has been 15 cents.

Example of VdF returnable glass bottles in sizes 0.2 l and 1 l

The VdF reusable system provides four reusable bottle sizes made of white glass (0.2  liter , 0.5 liter, 0.7 liter and 1.0 liter). The " flagship " of this system is the 1.0 liter bottle: at over 65 percent, it is at the top of all other returnable bottles in the fruit juice industry, and it is taken back in practically all beverage and supermarkets in Germany.
