The Zurich Metropolitan Area Association is made up of around 110 member municipalities and towns and the cantons of Zurich , Aargau , Thurgau , Schaffhausen , Schwyz , St. Gallen , Zug and Lucerne . The association is the sponsor of the Zurich Metropolitan Conference . Its members work together for the economic and living space of the Zurich metropolitan region. The metropolitan area of ​​Zurich comprises over 250 municipalities and cities in eight cantons.

history

The initiators of the metropolitan conference were the canton of Zurich , the cities of Zurich and Winterthur as well as the association of presidents of the canton of Zurich . The first metropolitan conference with representatives of the cantons, cities and municipalities involved took place on May 22, 2007 in Rapperswil-Jona . The Metropolitan Area Zurich Association was founded on the occasion of the fifth Metropolitan Conference on July 3, 2009 in Frauenfeld .

The association is committed to increased cooperation and better networking between the cantons, cities and municipalities of the Zurich metropolitan area. It offers a platform for the exchange of information. It also promotes a holistic and large-scale development perspective and takes decisions on joint action programs with which the top position of Zurich as an economic and living space is promoted on a national and international level.

The overriding goal is to strengthen the quality of life and the international competitiveness of the Zurich metropolitan area.

Fields of action

To overcome the existing challenges, the strategic cooperation is bundled in the following four fields of action:

economy

The association's focus is on strengthening the economic sectors; it is committed to promoting innovation-friendly framework conditions. It demands operational innovation and access to know-how and new technologies. Another important concern for the association is the attractive design of the labor market for highly qualified workers as well as the further development of the educational location. He also calls for support for knowledge transfer and the coordination of strategic area development and the maintenance of performance.

The association has set itself the goal of turning the Zurich metropolitan area into a “Green Region”, which is characterized by its excellent location qualities in the area of ​​cleantech and can thus be positioned. In particular, more cleantech companies should be able to emerge and develop successfully.

The Metropolitan Conference of Zurich is committed to the certification of its communities by Energiestadt . For this purpose, it has entered into a partnership with the “Energiestadt” association and provides financial support to interested communities. In addition, the Metropolitan Conference cooperates with the Energy Agency for Industry (EnAW). Their SME model enables companies to enter into target agreements on the implementation of energy-saving measures. The Metropolitan Conference supports the SMEs in its member communities.

The association wants to contribute to maintaining the functionality of the transport system with the following strategic thrusts:

The land transport connections to the Swiss and European metropolitan areas and the accessibility of the centers are to be improved in a targeted manner. The association also wants traffic management to be optimized, while Zurich Airport should also be retained as an intercontinental hub. The association proposes spatially coordinating solutions in freight transport logistics and heavy-traffic-intensive uses and directing leisure traffic into more sustainable channels.

The Metropolitan Conference is committed to the realization of the following rail projects : Brüttenertunnel , Zimmerberg Base Tunnel II , Heitersberg Tunnel II and the expansion of Stadelhofen station .

In the road area, the Metropolitan Conference is committed to the following projects: six-lane expansion of the Zurich northern bypass and the Glatttal motorway . He is also campaigning for the Zurich city tunnel , which is expected to be completed by 2030.

The goals are social cohesion in the Zurich metropolitan area and the creation of a liveable environment for the entire population. It is also about cultivating cultural diversity, shaping integration and promoting identification with the space.

Dewr Verein offers the communities a platform for mutual exchange. Questions of integration or cultural engagement should be discussed together and ideas for promoting identity with the metropolitan area should be developed and implemented together. A project is currently in progress that examines the effects of immigration-related population growth on the metropolitan area and shows the resulting options for action. The Metropolitan Conference wants to involve the municipalities more closely in project processing and decision-making.

The association intends to shape, maintain and strengthen the region as a whole.

In the “Park Landscape” project, important local recreation areas in the Zurich metropolitan area are identified. Best practice experiences are exchanged among the cantons, cities, municipalities and other actors in the Zurich metropolitan area. Cross-border local recreation projects strengthen the togetherness of the sub-areas in the Zurich metropolitan area. Three "metro images" were designed using a test planning process. In the medium term, a common spatial concept for the metropolitan area of ​​Zurich is to be developed.
