The Zurich northern bypass , also known as the Zurich Nordring , is a section of the A1 and A4 motorways in the north of Zurich . With over 100,000 vehicles, it is one of the most heavily used motorway sections in Switzerland. The opening took place on June 21, 1985 after seven years of construction.

history

According to the national road planning of 1960, the A1 and A3 in Zurich Letten would have been merged with the Zurich Expressstrassen-Y . There was strong resistance to this project, and it was already clear at the time that it would not be able to cope with the rapidly growing traffic. Therefore, in 1964, the route to be kept free was determined for a connection north of the city between the motorway from Zurich to St. Gallen and Bern . In 1971 this northern bypass was included in the planning of the national road network together with the western bypass as the N20. Construction began in 1978.

description

The northern bypass leads from the Zurich-North junction towards the west. With a 380 meter long overburden, the stilt tunnel , the SBB lines from Zurich to Schaffhausen , to Zurich Airport and to Opfikon will be underpassed. After the connection to Zurich Seebach, there is the Büsisee car park near which two retention basins designed as biotopes have been created. At the Zurich Affoltern connection , the Wehntalerstrasse is crossed before the 3,230-meter-long Gubrist tunnel is passed through. At the western end of the tunnel there is the Weiningen semi-connection immediately before the northern bypass ends at the Limmattal motorway junction. Most of the northern bypass runs in artificial cuts to keep the noise pollution in the area low.

Expansion project

Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the northern bypass was already at its limit. The motorway section is best known for its heavy traffic, traffic jams and accidents. In the area around the northern bypass, there is a lot of alternative traffic on cantonal roads, especially when there are traffic disruptions on the northern bypass. The entire northern bypass is therefore to be expanded from four to six lanes and the Gubrist tunnel is to be provided with a third tube. In addition, a 580-meter-long stretch of motorway will be covered at Katzensee. The expansion costs almost a billion Swiss francs in total, of which a good half is accounted for by the Gubrist tunnel.
